March 5, 2012: Deadline for the 6th Annual Music issue.

June 1, 2012: Deadline for the Remembering the Civil War issue.

Pays $250 for essay-length pieces and $100 for shorter works. We are especially interested in reader-friendly articles and essays that deal with Southern topics in the broadest possible way and that open up a larger discussion on the South. Our full-length essays and articles generally run 15-20 double-spaced manuscript pages (3,750-5,000 words).

Alive Now is a devotional magazine that supports the spiritual lives of small groups as well as individuals. The magazine invites readers to enter an ever-deepening relationship with God, helps them reflect on contemporary issues from a faith perspective, and supports them in acting on these issues.

General Guidelines

Each issue of this bimonthly, 48-page magazine focuses on a contemporary topic that impacts the faith life. Divided into sections that move readers through exploration and reflection on the theme, the magazine may be used weekly by individuals or members of small groups. The sections contain scripture, prayers, meditations, stories, poetry, reflection aids, photographs, and art. Seasonal material, both theological and liturgical, is appropriate.

This site is designed to inspire kids to write (and read). They are looking for "guest authors" to write opening chapters (up to 1000 words) to be used to inspire stories and books from the kids. Kids then write their story using your story start, the stories go online, and when their purchased by family and friends of the child, the "guest author" receives a royalty.

Convention Kitty Contest
Open to all poets.

Help us prepare for the 2013 National Federation Convention!!

Only $1 per poem, maximum of 15 poems per entrant per contest. The NMSPS will award half the pot (up to $100) to three prizewinners in the following proportions:

1st Prize: 50% - 2nd Prize: 30% - 3rd Prize: 20%

All contests accept any form or free verse, 40 lines maximum.

Contest 1, postmark by 1 March 2012: Theme: The Four Ages (childhood, youth, maturity, old age) Contest 2, postmark by 1 June 2012: Theme: The Four Elements (water, fire, earth, air)

Contest 3, postmark by 1 September 2012: Theme: The Four Directions, or Four Winds

Contest 4, postmark by 1 December 2012: Theme: Up "Four" Grabs. You choose a theme related to "Four," but note the reference on each poem for our contest judge. This allows you to split the themes. For example you may submit a poem on The Four Seasons, another on the Four Marx Brothers, or one on Quarters or Quartets.

Coming in on Hwy 281, you turn left onto Hwy. 290, heading west. You are looking for a dirt road driveway on your left, in about a half a mile. The exact address is 502 W. Main St. (same as 290), between Ave. N and Ave. O. We will have balloons and a gentleman directing you to the right spot. The main thing is it is a dirt road on your left just past where the old log fence starts.

Submit fiction and non-fiction pieces between 1,000 and 4,000 words. Pieces should be grounded in the American South (any time period, pre-historic to modern; rural or urban) and should include elements of the fantastic / supernatural that come from Southern history, tradition, or folklore. Generic vampire and werewolf stories aren't appropriate. While violence, gore, and eroticism may be part of your submission, they should not be the primary focus -- let's keep it more PG-13 than R-rated. Submissions must be previously unpublished. $50 per accepted piece. Deadline March 1, 2012.

This new anthology will be a collection of personal non-fiction stories written by individuals 18 years and older. We are looking for humorous and inspiring stories and if they have an edge and are different, even better. No death/dying or sad stories here. The Not Your Mother’s Book (NYMB) series will be targeted at adults and, as such, language and situations can be PG-13 or TV-14; anything that is broadcast on network television is fair game for this series.

Your story must be a true account of something that has happened to you or someone you know. It must be written in the first person. You must be 18 years or older. Your story must be between 500 words and 1,500 words. You retain the copyright to your submission.

As a contributor to titles in the Not Your Mother’s Book series, you will receive one copy of the book in which your story appears, and a share of royalties. For one year following publication, you will collect a small percent of the royalties paid to the co-creaters. Split among 60-plus contributors, the amount will likely not total more than $50-$100 per contributor. It could be more; it could be less. Don't expect to get rich, but do expect to have fun and promote yourself and your writing!

Call for Submissions

Western State Press, the literary press of Western State College of Colorado, invites submissions for our regionally-themed literary humor anthology. We welcome poems, fiction, and creative nonfiction that is focused on western locations and themes, and that has a quirky or humorous bent.

We seek literature that is both high-quality and that makes us giggle, guffaw, or fall out of our chairs and laugh manically on our office floor. There is a 25-page word limit, and remember that longer works should be able to keep us chuckling for the entire 20+ pages. Previously published works will be considered, though we prefer unpublished submissions.

We will be accepting work from August 20th through February 10th.

Personal Essay About Animals
A short, personal essay about an animal of any species, whether it's your pet dog or parakeet, an animal in a zoo or preserve, or an animal you photo-graphed, observed or bagged int he wild. In other words, the sky's the limit on writing about any crit-ter on Earth. Just make sure there's some form of personal interaction. 750 word limit.
