The Deane Wagner Poetry Contest was named to honor a long time member and poet who tragically passed away in the mid-nineties, but this contest has been an annual tradition of St. Louis Writers Guild since 1921. It is held each spring with First, Second, and Third Prizes and Honorable Mention awards presented in mid-summer. The contest seeks to discover exceptional, unpublished poems and to encourage poets through recognition and rewards.

St. Louis Writers Guild’s Deane Wagner Poetry Contest opens for submissions every April, the deadline is in June, and prizes are awarded in July. Historically, entries have come from all across the nation and Canada. Stories are blind-judged by an expert in the fields of writing and literature.

Poets do not need to be members of St. Louis Writers Guild to participate in this contest.

But at some point (often during the tween years), some of that reverence may be replaced by bad attitudes, dramatic sighs and yes—the dreaded eye rolling! The premise is: “INNER WORKINGS”

One or more characters must examine the inner workings of something important to the story. The “something” can be a physical object, a person’s mindset, a relationship, an idea... anything so long as the concept of “inner workings” can be applied to it literally or metaphorically.

Any genre except children’s fiction, exploitative sex, or over-the-top gross-out horror is fine.

How about first dates after divorce, reconnecting with a person from your past, or even simply finding your happily-ever-after where you least expected it? Tell us everything from love at first sight to dating disasters. For this book, we prefer contemporary stories. They will be favored over stories about events that happened decades ago. We are accepting stories from men and women 18 years and older. The deadline for story and poem submissions is July 15, 2013.

Alive Now is a devotional magazine that supports the spiritual lives of small groups as well as individuals. The magazine invites readers to enter an ever-deepening relationship with God, helps them reflect on contemporary issues from a faith perspective, and supports them in acting on these issues.

General Guidelines

Each issue of this bimonthly, 48-page magazine focuses on a contemporary topic that impacts the faith life. Divided into sections that move readers through exploration and reflection on the theme, the magazine may be used weekly by individuals or members of small groups. The sections contain scripture, prayers, meditations, stories, poetry, reflection aids, photographs, and art. Seasonal material, both theological and liturgical, is appropriate.

NASA English-language Haiku Contest

NASA English-language Haiku Contest

NASA is accepting entries for an English-language haiku contest that will put the three best poems aboard a space probe that will orbit Mars. The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration opened the contest on May 1. The deadline for entries is July 1.

The three winning haiku will be selected through online voting. They will be recorded on a DVD that will be loaded on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft.

English haiku, also called a three-line poem, is popular in the United States and Europe.

NASA is also collecting names that will appear on the DVD. All applicants can load their names on the DVD. MAVEN will be launched in November to orbit the Red Planet and study its atmosphere.

Japan has attempted similar efforts. In 1998, Japan’s first Mars probe, Nozomi, was launched, carrying the names of about 270,000 people. However, the probe failed to enter an orbit around Mars and is now orbiting elsewhere.

Weavings is neither a popular devotional guide nor a technical scholarly journal. We are looking for material that has spiritual depth expressed in simple, even poetic, prose. We hope authors will show our readers the subject rather than simply describe or explain it.

In this issue we explore ways of discernment that open our eyes to God’s guidance. What are spiritual practices that help us to see, to pay attention? What societal blindness do we suffer from (political, consumerism, lack of concern for others)? How do we contribute to one another’s blindness? What does release from blindness look like in our perspectives and worldviews? How can a shift in our perspective heal our blindness? In a more literal sense, what are some examples of ministry to and with those who are sight impaired that remind us of all the different ways in which we can “see”?
