Gabriele Rico Challenge for Creative Nonfiction
Reed Magazine is a literary journal published by San Jose State University. Two semesters of the Department of English and Comparative Literature's 133 class solicit, edit, and promote the magazine for each year. It is the oldest literary journal based west of the Mississippi River.
Reed 152 is an open-themed issue. We are looking for creative nonfiction, e.g. personal essays or narratives, not scholarly papers or book reviews. All works should be stand-alone essays, not chapters of a longer work.
Editors read all nonfiction submissions of up to 5,000 words.
Prize submissions require a reading fee of $20, which includes a free copy of the latest edition of Reed. (We are sorry that we cannot send complimentary journals to contestants outside the USA because of the cost of postage.)
Contest submissions not selected may still be considered for publication in the magazine.
Deadline: November 1, 2018
