On the Premises: Monsters

On the Premises: Monsters

No entry fee. Deadline September 3, 2021. Stories published in On The Premises are winning entries in short story contests launched every June and December. Each contest challenges writers to produce a great story based on a broad premise that we supply. Winning stories are published in individual magazine issues each April and October. In the short story contests, first prize is $250, second prize $200, third prize $150, and honorable mention $75.

The current contest is themed MONSTERS. For this contest, write a creative, compelling, well-crafted story between 1,000 and 5,000 words long in which someone or something is considered to be a monster… and maybe that’s accurate! Maybe you’re writing a straightforward horror story. Or maybe the “monster” label is terrible and undeserved. Or is the truth somewhere in between? That’s entirely up to you.
