Theme: When Poetry First Called
Form: Double Etheree
Line Limit: 20 lines
Prize Structure: 1st $25, 2nd $15, 3rd $10
Entry fee: $5 per poem
Contest Guide:
MUSTS: For this specific contest, what are the requirements of the form—like stanzas, rhyme, subject matter, length, source, etc.—if any?
1. The poem must portray who or what first inspired you and helped you experience poetry, or it must portray your emotional journey with that experience.
2. The poem must be about your own experience and how you were affected.
3. A double etheree is two etherees back to back to make one poem. The poem must be either:
a. A Double Etheree with a syllable count per line of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-10-9-8-7-
6-5-4-3-2-1. OR
b. A Reverse Double Etheree with a syllable count per line of 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10.
SHOULDS: For this specific contest, what poetic qualities, handling of subject matter, or
thematic focus should be prominent? Think about what or who first made you fall in love or really understand your connection to poetry, either as a reader or as a poet. How did that poem or that experience—or maybe even your surroundings-- make you feel? What emotions were evoked?
SOME POSSIBILITIES:
The etheree form might seem to breathe – in and out, ebb and flow, wax and wane, yin and yang, advance and retreat. Its form might call to mind other visuals or thinking. Consider how the etheree form might enhance the theme.
