Poetry Society of Colorado: Poetry “By Heart” as a Spiritual Practice
Our spiritual practices are personal, individual and often liberating. Of the hundred ways that poetry can serve as spiritual practice, this workshop will give expression to one of these.
It’s rare that we memorize anything—a phone #, directions, our grocery list, and unless you are a middle-schooler in English class or performance poet, rarely do we memorize a poem. There is a reason we equate memorization with “learning by heart”. When we step deeply into a poem, wrestle with it, embody it…it becomes a spiritual practice. Simply, it will change us.
