Poetry Society of Colorado
Ann Woodbury Hafen Memorial Contest
Deadline: February 17, 2018
Sponsor: Cheryl Wilkie
Theme: Transformation through Time
Form: Optional
Line Limit: 40
MUSTS:
For this specific contest, what are the requirements of the form—like stanzas, rhyme,
subject matter, length, source, etc.—if any?
The poem must deal with a transformation (physical, scientific, or societal) through an extended period of time.
• A transformation is a thorough or dramatic change in form, nature, or appearance. (Oxford Dictionary) Think mutation, metamorphosis, reconstruction, transfiguration.
• Extended encompasses decades, centuries, eras, or eons--- not just months or years.
SOME POSSIBILITIES:
You might step back from your everyday life and consider the larger flow of time. What comes to mind? Transformation through time brought the universe and physical earth into existence over billions of years. Ages and centuries have molded mankind’s societies, traditions, customs,
technologies, and understanding of science. All things pertinent to humans move in the continuous ebb and flow that time provides:
• From a walk in the park to Jurassic Park.
• From a Victorian washday to 21st century washers and dryers.
• From horseback to Mars to the future of the universe.
Contest Prize Structure: 1st Place: $25, 2nd Place: $15, 3rd Place: $10
Entry fee: $5 per poem
